Surviving in the harsh elements while adrift in the open ocean; that’s pretty much the concept behind this indie game Raft, which is currently in development. The Raft game will test your skills and resourcefulness as you collect items floating around you. Everything you need to survive can be sourced from the ocean!
Building a shelter to a protect yourself in this unforgiving environment is a must for survival. Beyond that, is really the difference between simply surviving and thriving. If you are crafty enough, you will be able to create your mini oasis in the sea complete with gardens, trees, and hammock, almost sounds nice!
What would a survival game be without a few life or death situations? Lurking in the depths, like a shadow in waves, can be seen the apex predator who would happily end your time on the raft in a bloody mess. You will need to learn to adapt to the constant threats around you. Never a dull moment as they say.
As mentioned, you will need to build a shelter out of the various materials that may be drifting by, but that is not the only source for useful items. The fact is, the reefs are an abundant source of materials like rocks and vines. You will also be able to dig in the sand and soil for other useful materials like iron which can be crafted into better, stronger tools.
Job #1 as you might expect. Build a suitable form of shelter to protect you from the harsh ocean environment. It doesn't need to be pretty, it just needs to work.
Never pass up a good opportunity. In the beginning, you will need to collect as many items drifting by as possible, this will be your first source of materials.
Once you take care of the basics, you will want to turn your attention to crafting better and more useful items in order to improve your chances of survival.
A big part of survival at sea will, of course, be to identify a source of both protein rich food and fresh water. It shouldn't be too much of a challenge to find some food, after all, it's swimming all around you. You will, however, need to get creative if you are going to collect enough fresh water to sustain life at sea.
I'd be lying if I told you this was going to be easy. The odds are by far stacked against you here and as if basic survival is not enough, you will have to contend with the constant threat from one of the worlds apex predators. Perhaps in time, you will find a way to turn the tables on said beastie.
As with most survival situations, a positive mindset and a little hard work will go along ways in turning simply surviving, into thriving. Haha, In no time you will have your feet kicked up as you watch the sunset on another beautiful tropical evening. Now, if only someone would bring you a damn beer.
